Too many black and Asian children grow up understanding the sad truth that to have dark skin is to be somehow inferior. Of course, Black and Asian parents work hard to give their children a positive self-image and confidence in their appearance, despite the cultural forces stacked against them. But when Black celebrities appear to deny their heritage by trying to make themselves look white, I despair for the youngsters who see those images. - Yasmin Alibhai

It’s scary to think these pictures were taken at the same year. When girls start hating themselves for their colour and features it upsets me to see piles of insecurities. No one needs to be a certain colour, or have a certain nose shape in order to be accepted as beautiful. But unfortunately that is not what role models and celebrities portray. Beauty has no colour. I personally know a girl who is so insecure about her skin colour that she has thought about bleaching her skin, and it’s sad. It’s sad to know that happens today. I have brown skin, and you know what? I love it. I love the colour of my skin. There are people who spend money on getting tans to get this “tanned/brown” skin, and so I’m not missing out on anything because my parents and God made me this way, and thus I shall love it. Beyonce is a beautiful woman, so I don’t understand why she opted for that look? She needs to stop spending time with Lady Gaga…
